Local Tips and Suggestions
While you are visiting Kaua'i, there are a few things to remember in order to help make your stay safer and more
enjoyable. These items are suggested in order to inform you of how things might be a little different here than your
home area and how some things may be the same.
Driving on Kaua'i. This island is very rural with small areas of town congestion. There are no freeways and the
maximum speed limit is 50 mph in open areas. Most roads are one lane in each direction with no center divider. Please
obey all speed limits (even if they seem a little slow) and don't be in a hurry, even though others may look like they
are. No U-turns in the middle of the highway please and stop at designated turn-outs for picture taking.
Swimming & Snorkeling. There are many safe, interesting places to swim and snorkel on Kaua'i. It is recommended to
swim and snorkel with a partner. Do not swim or snorkel alone! Check for beaches with lifeguards and never swim in
an area where there are no other people around. A few of the more popular, safer beaches are Poipu Beach, Lydgate
Beach, Salt Pond Beach and Ha'ena or Ke'e Beaches in the summer.
Activities and Tours. There are abundant tours and activities to experience here on the island. Ask your concierge,
front desk agent, property manager or Hoku Water Sports associate what some of the different or unique things there
are to do. You may be surprised how many things there are to enjoy on this small island.
Personal and belongings Safety. While Kaua'i is generally a very safe island with little crime, it is always a good idea to
practice common sense while exploring the island. Do not leave any valuables in an unattended car. Do not drive any
vehicles on any beaches. Obey No Trespassing or Private Property signs. If hiking, wear good footwear, carry a cell
phone and bring plenty of water. Don't forget your sunscreen.
Support the local economy. Even more so these days, small businesses and local ventures need all of our support.
Please check out the farmers markets for fresh produce, shop at smaller specialty stores and food outlets. The money
spent at these places stays here on Kaua'i. Each one of us appreciates every dollar spent at our local businesses.
